China on Thursday called on related parties to take measures to maintain regional stability, in response to recent reports that Japan will conduct a large military exercise to protect its remote islands.

"We have noticed such reports and hope the related parties can take steps to promote regional political mutual trust," Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular press briefing Thursday.

The military exercise from November 1-18 will include destroyers, fighter jets and 34,000 troops, and are aimed at bolstering Japan's ability to protect its remote islands, the Japanese government said Thursday.

The air-sea-land drill will involve amphibious landings on the uninhabited atoll of Okidaitojima, 400 kilometers southeast of the main Okinawa Island, a defense ministry official said.

The government said that the island is a considerable distance from the Diaoyu Islands.

However, defense force chiefs are considering deploying short-range land-to-sea missiles on the island of Ishigaki, which lies 150 kilometers from the disputed islands, the Asahi and Fuji TV networks said.

Japan's foreign ministry has produced two 90-second videos stating its case for ownership of the two disputed island groups with China and South Korea and posted them on its YouTube site.

Beijing and Seoul reacted angrily to the move.

South Korea lodged a formal protest over the video, calling in a senior Japanese embassy official to register disapproval on Wednesday.
