Martin wins Tour’s 9th stage

Irishman Dan Martin won the ninth stage of the Tour de France on Sunday after a dramatic day of racing in the Pyrenees saw yellow jersey holder Chris Froome forced to dig deep to defend his race lead.

Martin, of the Garmin team, came over the finish with his arms aloft in triumph after beating Dane Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) in a two-up sprint.

Froome and all the race favorites arrived 19 seconds later although the Kenyan-born Briton was the sole surviving member of a Sky team over the 168.5-kilometer race from Saint-Girons to Bagneres-de-Bigorre.

Porte, the 2013 Paris-Nice champion, was over 11 minutes in arrears when Froome came over the finish line alongside rivals Alejandro Valverde, Alberto Contador and Cadel Evans among others.

It meant Valverde has moved up to second place, only 1 minute 25 seconds behind Froome.

Martin's maiden win on the race, a few months after he lifted his biggest race at Liege-Bastogne-Liege, put the Irishman into the top 10 where he is eighth overall at 2:28.

Zakharov off podium in Kazan

London Olympic diving champion Ilya Zakharov failed to ignite the passion of Russian fans as he only ranked sixth in the men's 3 meters springboard at the 2013 Kazan Universiade in Kazan, Russia on Sunday.

However, Evgeny Kuznetsov, who gained the Olympic silver medal in the men's 3 meters springboard synchro with Zakharov, ensured the host the first gold medal at the games, beating China's Lin Jin by a small margin of 7.25 points.

Lin registered a high score of 83.60 points in the fifth round and entered the final round in the driver's seat.

But Kuznetsov then withstood the pressure and outclassed Lin with a higher degree of difficulty in the last dive. He collected 496.15 points from five rounds. Lin was second in 488.90.
